Set amongst the white chalk Galilee Mountains and the hostile desert terrain of the Negev Desert, the inbetween people is a story of longing that deals with hatred, forgiveness, and the search for redemption. The haunting poetic tone is not unlike that of Ben Okri's 'The Famished Road', whilst the themes examined are similar to those dealt with by Pat Barker in 'The Ghost Road'. The simplicity of the tone is unflinching throughout, and depicts the eternal search for a home and a sense of place.

The book is suffused with the dust and heat of the landscape, the despair of war and of simple love lost; duty and opportunity and freedom denied and hope that always rises. I enjoyed this a lot: with tiny details it took me to places I've never been and into the minds and lives of people trapped in their own stories and their country's history. I look forward to this author's next book.

This is a very moving story about the friendship between an Arab, Saleem, and a Jew, Avi, both living in Israel. I am particularly interested in books set in the Middle East and so scooped this up when I came across it. There is a haunting tone to this novel and the author seems to have a good understanding of the issues involved for the people who live there.

I loved the depiction and vivid descriptions of the desert. There are several themes at play in this novel. The friendship between Avi and Saleem is a central theme, but other themes are examined, such as that of loss and forgiveness. It is a serious book but a very beautiful one, and many of the scenes remained with me after I put the book down. I thought about this book while I was not reading it and always looked forward to the next chapter.

If I do have a criticism, it is of Daniel and the letters he wrote to his wife. At times I thought the language was a little flowery, but then I am not a big fan of letters in novels and this may be just a personal thing.

Overall I think that this is a really good book written by somebody who has a good understanding of the politics at play in Israeli society, and the issues faced by the people who live there
A beautiful novel, set in the haunting landscapes of Israel's desert, Emma McEvoy's The Inbetween People is filled with evocative scenery, haunting scenes, genuine characters, and an aching sense of that human desert of emotions between absence and loss. Avi is a Jew; Saleem was an Arab. Both served in the same army. Both loved the same scenery. And both were hurt by past neglects and present demands. But now Avi writes to the friend he says he killed, while his father writes to the wife he drove away. One tends a garden. The other stands by watching a garden tended. And father and son both thread their own paths in time through the weeds of memory.
Israel is a land defined by its long history and refusal to forget. In such a place, how do the wounded let go? How can life go on? But flowers bloom in the desert sand and hope is never quite dead. Avi and his father's stories intertwine with those of their loved ones and play out against a backdrop of beauty and pain. The words they can't find lurk in letters and wait to be told.
Past and present grow together in this novel, gaps filled in and puzzles slowly solved, secrets exposed. But somewhere between absence and loss there's a place of hope and acceptance. A child can sit after standing too long, and comfort can grow strong. Flowers do bloom in the desert. Children do hold their mother's hands. And every journey's end holds the promise of renewal.

This is a compelling story of two friends, Avi, a Jew, and Saleem, an Arab, who are swept up in the tide of war. Set in Israel, the novel moves back and forth in time between Avi's childhood, his youthful friendship with Saleem, and Avi's present-day military imprisonment. It is told from alternating perspectives Avi's retelling of Saleem's childhood and later life; Avi's first person account of the present day; and letters from Avi's father to his absent mother.

The novel poignantly explores the ramifications of the longstanding conflict between Arab and Jew, zeroing in on its impact on one particular friendship. It is very well-written, and explores the gray area where right and wrong, good guy and bad guy, do not exist. Rather, we have regular people who are caught up in a web of forces beyond their control. Issues of guilt, responsibility, and loyalty are deftly examined in this deep and thoughtful novel.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and found it to be a compelling story of the friendship between Avi, a Jew, and Saleem, an Arab, in Israel at a time of war . The novel moves back and forth in time and is is told from alternating perspectives. The people in the novel are not extremists, but are regular people caught up in a situation of war. However the world around them changes as a result of the political situation and it is impossible for everything to remain the same.

The characters in this novel are very real and as a reader I cared about what happened to them. I really enjoyed this novel and will be keeping a lookout for the next book by this author.
Wonderful reading about different classes of people and how humans deal with class classification. Quite an intetesting story which all will enjoy

The young couple of different cultural backgrounds that must leave the country to escape their families wrath.
Anyone who did the Kibbutz experience in the 70s or 80s is aware of these issues knows these characters and like as not can put a face to the names.Its been along time since the author lived in Israel, her characters are as real and relevant today as they were back then.
The tale is well told with abundant and obvious firsthand knowledge of her subject.
An enjoyable read I highly recommend to all those ex volunteers out there. .
